As part of an admirable but highly optimistic plan for a "Zero-Carbon Britain" by the year 2050, British Liberal Democrats announced today that they are committed to the complete abolition of gasoline- and diesel-powered cars by 2040. As a first step in that direction, the politicians proposed some stiff increases to Britain's car tax, as much as £2000 (about $4000) for the least efficient sport-utility vehicles. Nobody has yet mentioned the specifics of such a plan, except to note that it would mandate automakers to cease production (in Britain, at least) and importation of gasoline- or diesel-powered cars, in favor of alternative power sources, such as hydrogen or plug-in electric. Moreover, the scheme will call for huge government investment in the national rail system &mdash funded, appropriately enough, by highway tolls.

Now, if they can get the United States, Germany, France, Japan, Korea, China, and the rest of the world to follow suit, we might just have a plan.
