So, anticipating the new Radiohead LP has kinda been consuming fans for a while. Well, everyone thought that maybe there was some hope on the horizon when RadioheadLP7.com showed up on the webz a few days ago. But the problem was that it originally just featured a login and password that no one knew how to access. Fans either started claiming it was a hoax or a cool new ARG (these fans are also J.J. Abrams lovers or Wired bloggers).
Yesterday the site popped up with some sort of countdown that was supposed to end tomorrow morning, people began setting alarms. So, I cruised over there this afternoon and after about three seconds of the countdown screen minus the countdown (pictured) I was redirected to a "Transmitting..." screen accompanied by some white noise. Then... I got Rick Rolled. WTF?! Another screen popped up claiming it was a hoax ("THE MOST GIGANTIC LYING HOAX OF ALL TIME" to be exact). Now, there's never been any confirmation that this site had squat to do with Radiohead or the much anticipated LP7 but now I can't figure out if I'm more convinced this actually is related to the band (they like to pull random crap and do interesting marketing) or not (they have a lot of psycho prankster fans). I'm leaning in the direction of "no" but only in a 55/45 kind of way. Maybe more will surface in the morning. In the meantime, what do you think? Legit or no? Sound familiar?
The whole saga, including my message to the site, after the jump.
OK, so here's what happened this afternoon:
I went here and saw this for about three seconds:
Then, it turned to this:
Then it opened a new tab and (natch) played this YouTube clip:
[Funnily enough, it's described as "Halo 3 Gameplay" on it's YouTube page. Best comments? "pitchfork just got owned" and "radiohead u slags wheres the lp?"]
The main page then changes to this:
See that link for comments at the bottom? I went to that, and sent this:
Yeah. I haven't heard back. Jerks.
