The early-1990s fad for clear plastic electronics was the coolest thing since the late-1980s fad for yellow plastic. Why, then, has it taken so long for there to be a transparent pinball machine? Those are electrics that deserve to be seen.
Created by Michael Shiess, owner of the Lucky JuJu arcade in Alameda, the see-thru game was created by completely disassembling a 1976 title called *Surf Champ *and rehousing it in plexiglass. There's an entire flickr gallery dedicated to the thing, which would have ruled the arcade in the very earliest years of my youth. A translucent Space Invaders would simply not be the same.
The game will be on show for the first time at the 2007 Pacific Pinball Expo in San Rafael, CA.
