Next-Gen sat down with movie producer Jeremy Bolt and had a nice long chat about Resident Evil: Extinction, which he "believes" will be the last film. We can but hope. In all seriousness, the Resident Evil movies have been wildly successful thus far, earning more than $100 million each, and Bolt expects that Extinction will follow suit.
Bolt is heavily involved with the creation of videogame flicks. Besides the Resident Evil triology, he also produced DOA (he's as disappointed as you are), and is currently working on Driver and Castlevania movies, but as he explains, it's getting harder to find properties that will translate well and also be practical to make:
Horror, on the other hand, can be done fairly well relatively cheaply. Horror themes also reach out to non-gamers because certain fears are universal--running from zombies, for example.
It's an interesting read, and illustrates that the thought that goes into these films is more than just "what game sells a lot?" Oh, and for the record, I love the first Resident Evil movie, even though it's complete crap. Second one, not so much. I'm willing to give it some artistic license, but Nemesis with a Terminator-esque HUD? Um, no.
