Biofuel From CO2 and Sunlight
Pond scum: It's not just an insult anymore. Professor Pengchen (Patrick) Fu has developed strains of cyanobacteria -- green gunk growing in water -- that feed on carbon dioxide and produce ethanol as waste. While ethanol, an alternative fuel, is typically produced by costly and time-consuming farming techniques, Fu's method can make it within a few days using just water, sunlight and carbon dioxide -- perhaps the ultimate renewable resources.Image: Courtesy of SUNOL Biotechnology
