VAIO LT vs. iMac. Verdict: One Is A Computer, The Other Is A Next-Gen Entertainment Center

If you love the all-in-one form of the iMac, but don’t like that Cupertino style, your options are limited. In fact, there’s only one serious alternative: Sony’s VAIO LT. It is, in essence, the same thing: a sleek, well-designed machine that conceals laptop-like guts behind an expansive LCD display. Or is it?

If you love the all-in-one form of the iMac, but don't like that Cupertino style, your options are limited. In fact, there's only one serious alternative: Sony's VAIO LT. It is, in essence, the same thing: a sleek, well-designed machine that conceals laptop-like guts behind an expansive LCD display. Or is it?

While the new iMac has a crisp, retro look that embodies those classic Apple roundrects in iPhone-like form, the Sony more closely resembles a high-end television set: hard geometry, translucent bevels and uncompromising minimalism. It even comes with a wall mount, ready to be handed to your interior designer.

The real shocker, however, is that the Sony is both more expensive ($3,000!) and less capable than the iMac, rendering it a niche product for those who love the design — or who want a living-room computer that can actually replace their current TV set.
