Sadun cautions that the developers are “nowhere near releasing a general-use tool,” but the project is progressing nonetheless.

According the Sadun, the team has third Party apps running again, though it would seem that many will have to be recompiled for the new frameworks. Other signs of progress include:

  • The iPhone has been activated via third-party workarounds.
  • The Mobile Terminal App works on 1.1.1.
  • The entire BSD suite still works — as do standard command-line utilities compiled for ARM.

So far no success with unlocking the SIM card under the new iPhone 1.1.1 software. We'll be sure to keep you posted about the various iPhone developments, but somehow, sitting here staring at my iPhone, I can't help wondering what would happen if all these talented hackers applied their skills to a truly open phone — perhaps something running Linux — and just worked on improving the interface, wouldn't that be easier?
