Apple's shiny new version of OS X, Leopard, might not be quite the smooth update that has been reported. Both MacBooks and MacBook Pros are experiencing freezing keyboards. I know because it's happening to me, so if you want to skip the rant, move to the next post.
The first rule of a new OS is "never update a production machine with a 1.0 version". Unfortunately, the first rule of tech blogging is "try everything new for the edification of your readers". Obviously, this sometimes causes glitches, and this Apple support thread catalogs the extent of the problem.
Apple notebooks of several vintages are either completely losing their keyboard functionality, or (like mine) just dropping a few keys (the space bar, delete and tab keys, for example). Rebooting helps sometimes, as does plugging in an iPod.
Because the issue is affecting so many different models (including the brand new Santa Rosa Macbooks), it looks like a software problem rather than hardware. We'll keep you posted. And remember: if you have just moved to a new, internet free apartment, lugging a full sized keyboard to the local backstreet internet cafe isn't fun. I'll be swapping my Tiger hard drive back in later today.
