WASHINGTON -- The House Foreign Affairs Committee dubbed "Yahoo! Inc.!'s Provision of False Information to Congress," is about to begin, and Yu Ling (pictured at right,) the wife of imprisoned online pro-democracy activist and writer Wang Xiaoning, is sitting right behind Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang. So is Harry Wu.
Yu is suing Yahoo here in the United States for providing the Chinese authorities with identifying information about her husband. Representatives for journalist Shi Tao, another imprisoned Chinese journalist jailed because Yahoo turned over the relevant information to the authorities, has also joined the suit.
[Update] Shi Tao's mother Gao Qinsheng is also sitting behind Yang, and Committee Chairman Tom Lantos, D-Calif. has asked Yang to beg her forgiveness.
A large clump of about 10 camera men are out in front, and Yu Ling poses for the cameras.
The room is packed with lobbyists and in attendance is former Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta, who is now a partner at the public affairs firm Hill & Knowlton. [Tellingly, so was The Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank.]
