"The Australian Privacy Foundation and many friends have declared victory in relation to the Access Card.
"This was proposed to be a multi-purpose smart ID card, but actually a facilitator of a national ID scheme, a la the Australia Card of 1985-87.
"The outgoing Coalition government had suffered rejection by its own members of a Senate Committee, and had all-but give up on the idea; and the incoming Labor government elected on 24 Nov 2007 scrapped it.
