Pakistani opposition leader and former prime minister Benazir Bhutto was assassinated
Thursday at a political rally. The Washington Post reports...
Mannan Ahmed notes that the rally, with "'foolproof security' was held at Liaqut Bagh - a site which had already seen the assassination of another Prime Minister of Pakistan, Liaqut Ali Khan. There were earlier reports of security threats on her rally - similar reports were issued before the suicide attack on her in October." Back then, a pair of bombers tried to kill her in Karachi -- slaying more than 140 in the process.
Bhutto wasn't the only political leader targeted for death, either; assassins have twice in eight months tried to off the former interior minister, Aftab Ahmad Sherpao. More than 75 people were killed in those attacks. "Also Thursday, a rooftop sniper opened fire on supporters of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif at a different pre-election rally in
Rawalpindi, leaving four dead and at least five injured," the Post observes.
UPDATE: Who killed Bhutto: Islamic extremists? Their allies in Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence? Or maybe people acting on Musharraf's behalf? The Times of London speculates...
UPDATE 2: Back in 1997, Bhutto wrote an online diary for Slate. Ten years later, on the eve of her return to Pakistan, she wrote another one for the Huffington Post.
