Well, this isn't much of a surprise - hybrid owners tend to be wealthier, healthier and smarter than the rest of us, and they're often Democrats, too.

So say the people at Scarborough Research, a market research outfit that examined the demographics of America's hybrid owners and found Los Angeles and San Francisco are the nation's most hybrid-happy cities.

Given the premium that must be paid for a hybrid like the Toyota Prius or Lexus RX Hybrid, it's no surprise the people who buy them are affluent - 42 percent of households with a hybrid in the driveway have an annual income exceeding $100,000. That's more than twice the national median.

Hybrid owners are two to three times more likely to practice yoga, ski, hike or belong to a gym. They are twice as likely to hold a college degree and three times more likely to have post-graduate degrees. Thirty-eight percent identify themselves as Democrats, 14 percent as Republicans and 34 percent said they are independents. The rest of them didn't say how they vote.

California led the way in hybrid sales this year, with 62,733 vehicles sold so far. Three out of four them rolled out of showrooms in Los Angeles and San Francisco, which have more hybrid cars by a huge margin than any other metropolitan area in the nation. Florida was a distant second, with 12,736 hybrids sold this year.

Scarborough says sales of gas-electric hybrids are on track to exceed 300,000 this year. According to our friends at Autoblog Green, 33,233 hybrids were sold in November, and increase of 82 percent over the previous November.
