As we head towards the New Year in the aftermath of the WGA strike, it’s become painfully obvious how S.O.L. we’re all going to be in a few short weeks. Reservoirs of unwatched TiVo’d shows are runnin’ dangerously low. Scripted shows are rapidly nearing the bottom of the barrel, and more-awful-than-usual reality shows are on the rise. Like most everyone I know, I’m getting desperate for a decent TV fix.
All hail web video!
Enter Brad Neely’s videos on Superdeluxe. You may have seen socially-inept, line-drawn figure of Babycakes dancing and singing in snippets on Adult Swim, but to fully appreciate the gamut of comic artist’s Neely’s strange, layered comic genuis, spend a couple minutes perusing his two animated serials, Babycakes and The Professor Brothers. Babycakes episodes are the diary entries of a 30-year old rapping manchild still livin’ at home and trying to make sense of the world. Or check out the American History lectures delivered by randy duo Frank and Steve in The Professor Brothers.
Neely, who has worked as a consultant writer on South Park, also did a great (and unauthorized) rendition of the first Harry Potter movie called Wizard People, Dear Reader, that you watch with the sound off, playing his narration. If you have any desire to see a MST3K meets Potter mash-up, or like things that are funny, it’s a must-see.
Neely’s hilarious shorts are all labeled suitable for "Mature Audiences" so consider them all NSFW. (Headphones, check! Screen angeled out of passerby-sight, check!). Since the holidays are swift-approaching, here’s Babycakes latest, a Christmas carol short, but head on over to the site and dig around. You won’t regret it.
