Capcom has announced that online play for Resident Evil: Outbreak and Monster Hunter will end on December 31st when the servers shut down for good.

Though Capcom says plans were in place to continue supporting the games despite their age, the company providing the server hosting for both games has decided to get out of the PS2 online business completely. So why not just get a new host? It's apparently not that simple:

We've tried to extend the contract, move it someplace else, etc. It's not happening. The hosting partner (who I guess remains nameless here) is just quitting the business entirely and doesn't want to mess around with the time/money involved in porting anything.

Never thought much of Outbreak, myself, but it's still a shame that those who enjoyed it and *Monster Hunter's *online play are having the rug pulled out from under them.
