Virtual Cable Route Marker Shows The Way

The actual product is far from finished, but the idea of the Virtual Cable is a great one. Instead of glancing at maps or following spoken instructions, this system projects a red line onto the windshield for you to follow. Technically, it’s not much different to any other HUD, using lasers and mirrors, but if you check the video you’ll see that the floating red cable is very intuitive (although the YouTube quality is poor: Check the site for a clearer clip).

The problem, though, might be getting that line to match up to the roads. The software combines information from GPS, map data and inertial sensors to work out where to put the cable. It’s one thing to mock up a video concept like those on the site. It’s a whole lot harder to get this working glitch free in the real world. Especially as people tend to, shall we say, over-rely on their satnav.
