The mobile version of Apple's Safari web browser, used on the iPhone and iPod Touch, doesn't like Flash, but web video sure does, which led Joe Maller to create iTransmogrify, a bookmarklet that transforms embedded Flash content into direct links to the natively supported formats for viewing on the iPhone.
That means that those broken plugin icons for embedded video have a possible workaround and YouTube videos and MP3s can be played from Safari with just a few clicks.
The video above shows iTransmogrify in action, but the basic setup is simple: add the iTransmogrify bookmarklet to Safari, sync you iPhone and then the next time you hit an embedded video just head into your bookmarks and select iTransmogrify.
The source code and bug-tracking is available on the iTransmogrify Google Code page. ITransmogrify currently supports the default YouTube embed code, object code and a variety of Flash-based MP3 players including Digg Podcasts.
Maller says he plans to add more sites “as I figure them out.”
