Last night whilst channel-surfing during Lost I caught the promo (right) for tomorrow's Saturday Night Live with guest host Ellen Page and I felt a slight flutter of joy. Now, while I usually get all a-twitter at the thought of Page anyway, seeing her next to Andy Samberg sent my mind racing with thoughts of the viral video gold they could create.
The first thing this promo reminded me of was Samberg's pairing with Natalie Portman on her SNL gangsta rap, which I still count as probably the funniest two-and-a-half minutes of video ever put together. After that visions of "Lazy Sunday" and, of course, Samberg and Justin Timberlake's "Dick In a Box" sped through my head in short order.
Portman and Timberlake are funny collaborators, no doubt, yet the humor in their shorts came from them playing at least somewhat against type. But Page - anyone who's seen Juno or any interview she's ever done ever will tell you - can be outright hilarious (she's pretty much the deadest pan in the kitchen).
So, am I wrong in thinking there could be another viral video sensation in the offing if she hooks up with Samberg? It'd be enough for them just to do a break-dance version of "I'm "F**king Mike Cera" or something, but they're capable of much more. Also, the long weeks of the writer's strike probably allowed the SNL team to mentally bank some good material. Maybe in lieu of an Oscar, Page could get an Emmy (stranger things have happened). What do you think, dear readers, will there be magic? And, if so, what would you like to see them do?
