SAN FRANCISCO – Two-dimensional images are lovely and all, but there's something about toys you can pick up and play with, at least to those of us who still think it's pretty awesome that we get to have ice cream for breakfast if we want.
There was no shortage of plastic playthings presented for purchase at WonderCon over the weekend, as the comics convention turned San Francisco's Moscone Center into a mammoth geek shopping mall. Here are a few of the more notable items on display.
Tofu Robot, created by Kazuko Shinoka and sold by Spicy Brown. They look about 50 percent more edible than actual tofu, but they're plastic. Go fig.
Just in case you feel that your Lego figures are under-armed, you can pick up some serious Lego-compatible ordnance, based on actual weaponry, from BrickArms. That way you'll be ready if those Playmobil bastards invade.
Marrow, the steam-powered scarecrow, is the hand-made mascot of Steam Crow Press, purveyors of fine monsters, creeps and creatures.
The Maniac is the homicidal head honcho of Red Velvet, a "slasher flick with a sense of humor" currently being shopped around. I can't tell if he's scary or ridiculous, but I'd sure as hell cross the street if I saw him coming. Even without the hatchet.
Say hello to Carl Cthulhu, an adorable abomination from the Little Gloomy comic series created by Landry Walker and Eric Jones and published by Slave Labor Graphics. Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl awwwwwww...
Darth Vader suffers the twin indignities of a monkey on his back and a price tag on his crotch. "I don't know," says the Lord of the Sith. "It's still not as humiliating as being played by Hayden Christensen."
