Earlier today, fellow Gadget Lab scribe Charlie Sorrel wondered whether the Airport X-Ray play set was the most inappropriate kids’ toy ever, and my lizard brain got to thinking that it is probably not. Other than the usual list of bad things one could give as a toy (weapons, Elmo, and Windows Vista come to mind), the board game War of Terror would be at the top of my list.
The War on Terror is board game that tries to put a funny spin on the current situation with a tongue-in-cheek enthusiasm that’s a bit hard to take, even if you know it’s supposed to be funny. Here’s a quick description from their site:
Yes, it’s supposed to be an ironic twist about how everyone takes the current situation too seriously, and about how the associated terror words are used by some politicians for fear-mongering and how you can gain control of them and all, but I still wouldn’t be comfortable with kids playing it. After all, they might become desensitized, get the wrong idea and start saying things such as “drop the nuclear bomb and take out some of the villages!" Well, maybe that that’s not the board’s fault.
Check out the video (with a child who said the comment above) about a tournament begun by the creators of the War on Terror Game, from Current TV.
