News of Couillard's former relationships with two criminal figures spilled into public view on May 7. She said the past three weeks have been "extremely difficult" and that she spent the first three days hunkered down behind drawn blinds.

"I've been cut off from the world, it's like everyone has turned their back on me," she said, later adding that her relationship with Bernier has "destroyed my life."

As for the government envelope, Couillard said that, once she realized it contained official documents, she contacted an "eminent" lawyer for advice on what to do. She refused to say whether she read the documents.

"I couldn't shake the feeling I was being followed and spied on," she said. "It's so unreal I feel like I was in an episode of the Twilight Zone."

Couillard also says Bernier knew about her past criminal associations from the outset of their relationship – contradicting the government's version of events.

"I have nothing to be ashamed of, I never did anything wrong, I never did anything to embarrass my country," she told TVA.

Couillard spoke about feeling abandoned by Bernier when stories first broke about her links to members of the Hells Angels biker gang.

The former model said she wanted to restore both her reputation and dignity, while accusing the media of portraying her as a "trollop." (...)
