5/5/2008: Power station transforming into film city (Published by Caroline Ceytte )
French director and producer Luc Besson, manager of the production company EuropaCorp, (((I think Mr Fifth Element there is clearly a genius just for naming his outfit "EuropaCorp"))) plans to turn an industrial wasteland in the Parisian suburb Saint-Denis into a “Cité du Cinéma” [Film City]. After submitting his project in February this year, Besson will be starting construction works in summer. The opening is scheduled for 2010.The choice of Saint-Denis is by no means a coincidence. The city counts two old power stations of the 1930s which used to supply the Paris metro. Besson knows them more than well: several scenes from his movies Nikita (1990) and Léon (1994) were shot there. (((Plenty of room there for hardbitten French guntoting assassins.)))
In 2006 Besson bought the two rusted buildings from the French electricity supplier EDF (Electricité de France). With the support of companies such as Thomson and the concerned municipalities Besson will be investing 130 million euros in the transformation of the 6.5 hectares large site. Nine film studios are planned to arise as well as production workshops for stage setting elements and technical ateliers.
According to French press agencies one of the two power stations shall be renovated and provide 30.000 square meters to accommodate offices for production companies. There will also be a restaurant, a car park and everything necessary to attract film directors and make a movie from A to Z....
