No big surprises for the videogame industry's U.S. sales for the month of May. Grand Theft Auto IV and Wii Fit, as it turns out, are big hits. Who knew.
Wii Fit, as I've said before, is quite supply-constrained in the U.S. In fact, I'm actually quite shocked at the number: Nintendo got less than 700,000 units of the game into stores in the month of May, a tiny amount considering the massive marketing efforts all wrapped up around it. A commenter yesterday pointed out a Los Angeles Times article in which analyst Michael Pachter says that he believes Nintendo is profiting off the strong euro and sending four times as many Wii Fit units to Europe as to the U.S.
The hardware, the software, and Nintendo's and Sony's spin on the numbers, all below.
- Wii 675.1K
- Nintendo DS 452.6K
- PlayStation 3 208.7K
- Xbox 360 186.6K
- PlayStation Portable 182.3K
Software
- 360 GRAND THEFT AUTO IV TAKE 2 INTERACTIVE (CORP) 871.3K
- WII MARIO KART W/ WHEEL NINTENDO OF AMERICA 787.4K
- WII FIT W/ BALANCE BOARD NINTENDO OF AMERICA 687.7K
- PS3 GRAND THEFT AUTO IV TAKE 2 INTERACTIVE (CORP) 442.9K
- WII PLAY W/ REMOTE NINTENDO OF AMERICA 294.6K
- WII SUPER SMASH BROS: BRAWL NINTENDO OF AMERICA 171.1K
- PS2 IRON MAN SEGA OF AMERICA 130.6K
- WII GUITAR HERO III: LEGENDS OF ROCK ACTIVISION 116.8K
- NDS POKEMON MYSTERY DUNGEON: EXPLORERS OF DARKNESS NOA 107K
- NDS POKEMON MYSTERY DUNGEON: EXPLORERS OF TIME NOA 102K
Nothing too surprising. Mario Kart Wii had an excellent second month, continuing to move copies even after an explosive April. I think the only shocker here is the fact that Iron Man actually managed to wedge its way into the GTA-and-Nintendo-dominated list.
Now for everyone's favorite part: the spin. Nintendo takes the opportunity to flesh out some of the details we don't see and point out some more games that made the Top 30 this month.
I will have some of what* Sony *president Jack Tretton is having.
Microsoft did not send out any spin yet today, and quite frankly if I had just placed third in a three-horse race I would try to ignore it too.
If they do send out anything, I'll update.
