Indie video and online collaboration have made music more fun than ever, especially for those who have been hosed by any number of offenders. Matt Kresling’s beef is with student loaners and a complicit higher education system, and his song "The Beast That Swallows Its Young" is a laugher aimed straight at their pocketbooks. In fact, he even offers some unsolicited advice on the economic rabbit hole: "Consider defaulting on your student loans."
Priceless.
Kresling created his homegrown video using his own greenscreen (bought with student loans?) and the collaborative music site Kompoz. It’s a fine riot, featuring a distinctly normal Kresling and his ukelele being harassed by a cadre of suits with earpieces looking for their money. Favorite parts include Kresling hanging up on one collector after he finds out that Dickensian debtors prisons no longer exist, and one Aaron Eckhart-looking collector snarling "You owe!" and "Collecting federal debt!" over and over again.
In terms of sonics, it’s a bouncy number that should make fans of They Might Be Giants or OneRingZero feel nicely at home. Just watch for the dancing debt collectors at the end. Good times, people, especially for anyone who’s graduated from college only to find that the costs of that college are going nowhere for decades. Sock it to them, ukelele nerd!
