"We've never had to deal with anything like this," Prafla said. "I wouldn't have expected anyone to take the entire ATM machine."

Surveillance video from the Texaco station showed that a four-man crew pried the door open with a crowbar, connected a chain from the ATM to a Suburban and pulled it out of the store, police said. The store's alarm company notified the clerk who had closed the store about the break-in, and the worker returned to the station as the burglars were pulling away.

"He followed them in his car, and they dumped the machine, so we were able to get it back," said store Manager Jay Bergmann, gesturing to the beaten and unusable remains of the machine in the store office.
