Two legends from somewhat different areas of the music scene are working on lining up a collaboration that seems counter intuitive at first, but actually makes perfect sense. Tom Waits and Tricky each tend to build their songs over loping, narcotic beats, and music made by both has, I assume, seen lots of play in the world's more well-appointed opium dens.
Tricky explained to Uncut that Island Records founder Chris Blackwell told him six months ago that Tom Waits had expressed interest in working with him. Tricky seems keen on the idea:
"Tom invited me to chill out with him in San Francisco, and when I'vegot time, I will," said the beatsmith and vocalist. "It's almost like me and Tom were fated to worktogether."
Both agree they'd make an interesting pair sonically. Tricky observes that whatever they record, it'll sound different from anything either one has done in the past. While they share certain fundamental elements, their sounds come from different places (listen below).
"I can't imagine what will come out of it, but I know it'd be a brandnew type of music, different to him or me," said Tricky. "I was compared to 'Tom Waitson acid' when I first came out. I didn't know his stuff then, but itled me to checking him out and I love it."
