The Dynamic Tower is a new, off-the-shelf skyscraper which qualifies as a gadget because it packs in so many weird features. First, it's a prefab. The floors are built off-site and are shipped in, where they are then hoisted and joined to a central spindle, ending up much like a game of Tower of Hanoi. Thus, construction is fast: the building goes up at a rate of one floor per week.
So, if you had a building made of donuts on a stick, what would you do? You'd make the floors spin, right? That's exactly what the Dynamic Tower's architect, Dr. David Fisher, has done. Each floor will slowly revolve, continually altering the shape of the tower. And to power this excess, there are wind turbines between each floor, making the entire building self-sufficient for electricity.
The first Dynamic Tower will come in the form of luxury apartments, offices and a hotel, and it will be in – where else? – Dubai. The block will measure 1,380 feet and contain 80 floors. The huge apartments (up to 12,900 square feet), even come with a parking space inside, although we imagine that the gas-guzzling cars parked in them are unlikely to be as green as the building that houses them.
The Dubai tower will be ready in 2010, and will be followed by a smaller one in Moscow. Check the video below to see the thing in action, and start saving. The Russian building will cost $400m and the Dubai version $700m.
