"However, as contractors mopped up rain leakage inside the 154-year-old landmark, other experts disagreed. The delay in installing the temporary roof has been of growing concern among historical preservationists across Texas for weeks, amid a debate over whether red tape might be delaying things.

"The mansion should have had a temporary roof erected over it in the first 30 days. The fact that it still does not have a temporary roof is a tragedy of epic proportion," said Joe Pinelli, an Austin preservation contractor and former member of the State Preservation Board when the Texas Capitol was restored.

"Water infiltration is the enemy ... The project appears to have great expertise but lacks of a sense of urgency." (((Actually, "the enemy" would appear to be the guy in cargo pants who set the place on fire with a Molotov, but there's no sign of him.)))

Johnson said architects and engineers have been working as fast as possible to get a temporary roof installed, but said structural and engineering issues have delayed that process. In late June, officials said the cleanup was slow and tedious as crews worked to shore up the sagging structure one room at a time, and ensure that all historical fabric in the fire-damaged interior was properly documented so it could be eventually restored. At one point, historical experts were sifting each wheelbarrow of charred debris to ensure no relics were being thrown away....
