Along with the iPod shakeup yesterday, Apple announced two new sets of earbuds, both with in-line remote controls.
The first set, catchily named Apple Earphones with Remote and Mic, is for use with the new iPods announced yesterday -- the 4G Nano, 2G Touch and 120GB Classic. Although they'll work with any other iPod, the remote and microphone functions will be disabled. The remote works thusly: The top and bottom buttons control volume, and the center button does the rest -- one click for play/pause, two to skip forward and three to skip back. This is going to be most useful for the Touch which, despite its new volume buttons is still a pain to control. $30
Second is a high-end, in-canal set. Each bud has a woofer and a tweeter and a choice of silicone prophylactics depending on the size of your ear-hole. These also have a microphone for the Nano's new voice recorder function. From Apple's PR department:
$80. Hopefully they won't break after six weeks like every other pair of Apple headphones I have owned.
