The iPhone is a kick-ass gaming machine. If the accelerometers, high-res display and fast-enough processor can take care of Super Monkey Ball, they're going to be fine for pretty much any casual game. But whereas a touch-screen keyboard works (just) for typing, on-screen buttons just aren't up to the fast twitch responses needed to control a game. In short, the iPhone needs a proper joypad.
And if the rumors are true, Belkin is getting one ready. Seen above are leaked shots and schematics detailing the JoyPod, an upcoming joypad/case for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The eight-button controller (four on the front and two triggers -- probably on the shoulders) will hook up through the dock connector.
According to the specification, the add-on has official App Store support, which would mean that in future it might actually be possible to control Super Monkey Ball instead of simply dropping poor AiAi into the drink every two seconds
The only thing missing now is Mario. That will obviously never, ever happen, but we all have our dreams.
UPDATE: Belkin's PR manager, Melody Chalaban, mailed to deny this rumor:
It makes sense. The JoyPod in the picture is a little too ugly for a Belkin product. Thanks, Melody!
