An application released Thursday attempts to help you track down a thief if he or she takes your iPhone and runs.
Called Private-I, the $1 application shows up as an icon on your handset that reads "PRIVATE" in big red letters, provoking thieves to open it. When launched, Private-I loads a fake screen that says "Accessing pictures" and then uses the iPhone's location-based capabilities (GPS if you own an iPhone 3G; triangulation if you own a first-generation iPhone) to send you an e-mail with a Google Maps link containing coordinates of the thief's location.

It seems like this app would be more useful for iPhone 3G owners who can get more precise coordinates using GPS. I just tested the app on my first-generation iPhone and received a Google Maps link that doesn't tell me anything. Any other first-gen iPhone owners having the same problem?
Interesting app in theory, if it works...
iPhone security has been a concern among some. Recently, users discovered a major security flaw in iPhone, allowing thieves to potentially access some private information -- even with the passcode enabled. Also, in a recent webcast, a hacker revealed a privacy leak in iPhone, which involves the handset snapping screenshots whenever the Home button is pressed.
