As David Cameron prepared ahead of today's key note speech at the Tory party conference in Birmingham, wife Samantha had her own concerns.
With style rivalry between the world's First Ladies hotting up (((Huh? Whaaa...? She took a tip from the current reigning queen of First Lady fashion, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy. (((Okay, the planet's broke, but we're going to hell dressed to the nines, and, if possible, toting acoustic guitars.)))
Since her union with French president Nicolas Sarkozy, model wife Carla Bruni has repeatedly proved her status in the style stakes with an endless collection of simple, elegant shift dresses that has won her comparisons with Jackie O.
And the simple, elegant shift dress - by American designer Phillip Lim - chosen by Samantha Cameron this afternoon could have been straight from the wardrobe of the Italian ex-model. (((Well – Sarkozy's of the right, and Cameron's a Tory – and his wife has a tattoo. That's something, isn't it? Maybe once Bush is gone we'll have some really gaudy, blinged-up, Cavalier-style right-wingers, guys with panache who wear aviator shades and beat up Somalian pirates.)))
The emerald green dress was chic without being showy, looked expensive enough to speak of quality and taste, but classic and understated enough not to detract from the most important issues of the day - her husband's policies....
