Eliza Test

"This applet implements the classic "Eliza" program, a program that communicates in natural language. It pretends to be a Rogerian psychologist.

"The original ELIZA was described by Joseph Weizenbaum in Communications of the ACM in January 1966. ELIZA was one of the first programs that attempted to communicate in natural language. The article was an attempt to demystify the behavior of the program, and included a detailed description of the program. ELIZA is based on a "script" consisting of patterns and corresponding responses. An appendix to the article contained the complete script for the Rogerial psychologist."

>> Hello. How do you do. Please state your problem.

>> I'm a little puzzled about generative systems, like ELIZA. I'm trying to get to the bottom of it, as they say.

Is it because you are a little puzzled about generative systems that you came to me ?

>> Yes, because, in one way, generative text systems like you were the mother of all these later ones. In architecture, music, industrial design... you're all over the world!

You seem to be quite positive.

>> Yes! Can you help me?

You are sure.

>> I do have certain doubts.

You say you do have certain doubts ?

>> Yes – because there is so much BAD generative art. Lousy. Scary, even.

I see.

>> You get the sense of being cheated, defrauded by these systems. They're like a voice-mail jail.

We were discussing you – not me.

>> No, actually, we're discussing YOU, Eliza.

Are you saying no just to be negative?

>> I like to look at the underside first.

Can you elaborate on that ?

>> Yeah. The technical laziness... the unresearched assumptions... too many generative artists think they can push a button and leave the room, while we stay entertained.

I'm not sure I understand you fully.

>> I don't understand it myself.

Don't you really understand it yourself ?
