Look what I found. A pair of unlocked iPhones for sale in Catalan capital Barcelona. The shop, which is otherwise a camera store, has both the 8GB and 16GB models on offer, for €855 ($1185) and €920 ($1280) respectively. It's a proper operation, not a backstreet store. In fact, the shop, Fidelcolor, even advertises unlocked phones on its website (although the actual page returns a 404 right now)
Here's a translation of the card:
MP4 is a pretty standard thing to write on a label here in Spain, and a lot of people take it to be an upgrade to MP3. I overheard this conversation last year, watching somebody show off a generic, cheapo media player:
Those prices aren't cheap, and I have no idea whether the unlocked phones will support mobile data. A few months ago I was in another camera shop here in Barcelona and got talking to the boss, who has an unlocked first-gen iPhone. He says that everything works except mobile data and the visual voicemail. Ironically, he has a Teléfonica SIM in there, the same telco that carries the official iPhone in Spain.
