Wall-E, 30 Rock and Danny Boyle's underdog epic Slumdog Millionaire scored big Sunday at the Golden Globes, but it was Heath Ledger's winning performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight that produced the evening's most poignant moment.
A nearly tearful Chris Nolan, who directed the late actor in the Batman movie, gave a somber acceptance speech on behalf of Ledger, who was honored with the Golden Globe for best supporting actor in a drama. "After Heath passed on, you saw a hole ripped in the future of cinema," Nolan said. "He will be remembered forever,"
Slumdog Millionaire won best drama, Wall-E won best animated feature, 30 Rock won for best TV comedy and True Blood fang banger Anna Paquin won for best actress in a TV drama. Wired.com's most entertaining presenter award goes to the free-wheeling Ricky Gervais -- who was not nominated for anything, as he pointed out.
Gervais reminded the audience that when Kate Winslet appeared as herself on his series Extras, she complained about never winning any Oscars. He advised her to do a Holocaust movie. Winslet did exactly that, and picked up a Golden Globe as best supporting actress for her role in The Reader. Winslet also won best lead actress for Revolutionary Road.
