Abrams' younger, faster Star Trek movie opens, writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have already signed up to script a sequel with Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof.
The writers hope to turn in a draft to Paramount Pictures by the end of the year, in order to hit a summer 2011 release date, Variety reports. Abrams will produce the project but is undecided about directing.
Story direction will depend in part on fan feedback, Orci said: "We are waiting to see how audiences respond next month. With a franchise rebirth, the first movie has to be about origin. But with a second, you have the opportunity to explore incredibly exciting things."
In a 2008 interview with Wired.com, Orci and Kurtzman talked about the delicate matter of tackling a franchise as beloved as Trek.
"This was not something you go into lightly, unless you feel you really have something serious to contribute because we really grew up on Star Trek," Orci said.
