Drought map shows dry conditions disappearing
Sunday, November 01, 2009
At long last, the red is beginning to disappear from Texas' drought map.
After two years in which Central Texans nearly forgot what rain looked like, heavier-than-average rainfall in late September and much of October reinvigorated water supplies and restored greenness to trees and grass.
Forecasters expect the relatively wet weather to continue through early spring.
"We can be cautiously optimistic that the worst of the drought is indeed behind us," said Victor Murphy, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's southern regional headquarters in Fort Worth. "Texas seems to swing from one extreme to another. We're lurching from extreme dryness toward a pattern of increased wetness."
