Dark Data

*I don't even WANNA THINK ABOUT the "dark data." Which is pretty much why the dark data is there in the first place. So I don't have to think about it.

*I just learned the interesting if quite dubious factoid that the Fresh Kills landfill in New York is the largest single manmade structure on earth. A dump is made of small-unwanted-pieces loosely compacted. Stuff we no longer want to think about, because we threw it "away." Is that giant dump even a "structure?"

*And if we're getting all BLDGBLOG about the issue, couldn't we describe the vast electromagnetic, unseen, unrecognized, forgotten outbleeping of our radio and TV, spreading through outer space right now, as a giant junkheap "structure"? That's "dark data" of a sort, too, isn't it?

*If it's truly dark, is it even "data"? Besides, what's really "dark" about machine-to-machine communication? Even if no human being ever takes notice, that's a perfectly reasonable form of data engineering, isn't it?

*Of course, we're gonna blithely assume all that – until the autonomous dark data hunger comes crawling out of the cloudy megadumps we built, and vampirizes our frail fleshy bodies!!
