"Augmented reality app Layar has been downloaded more than 1.5 million times for iPhone and Android, co-founder Claire Boonstra announced at the MIPTV conference today.

"More than 500 layers for the app have been published by developers, with 2,000 more in development, said Boonstra, who also gave a hint at the company's monetisation plans.

"We will introduce paid-for layers later this month," she said, during a panel session on 'Mobile Engagement 2.0'. This will provide a new revenue stream both for Layar and its developer community.

"Boonstra also showed some of the interesting examples so far, including the Beatles AR tour of London, a game called Jewel Collector, and a branded Ubisoft campaign for Splinter Cell that involved chasing virtual characters round a real-world city.

"She also suggested that AR could be useful for TV brands from Top Gear and CSI to Sex and the City (((Augmented Sex in the City. Oh lordy)))
