High-IQ hacker overachiever dude in the slammer

*Where the system chose to put him. There are other systems that just woulda shot him.

*There are not a million guys like this, but sometimes I feel like I've met a million guys like this. Boy, this story makes me tired. Any hacker glamour one might see in this situation went away a long time ago, for me. It really burdens the soul.

*Interesting subculture, prison. Full of guys who are in there because they were doing favors for shady pals. Man-of-honor stuff. You scratch my back, I'll code up something that scratches yours.

*I've seen guys with this particular disorder get rehabilitated. Marriage. That seems to do it: a kind word, a little social coaching from the missus there, and a domestic routine that isn't 2 AM code-bombing. Unfortunately, this poor guy is already married. And his pal there is such a recidivist that he was hacking his head off even when he was a federal informant.

*There must be absolute chaotic teenage army, whacking keyboards right now, in a host of vast, nameless, cheerless, Chinese and Indian and Brazilian cities. "One in a thousand" would mean millions of them. Better hope they are one in a million.
