Kayla Sax is among the first women to become a US submarine officer but the real news is of course that she never goes anywhere without her copy of Wired Magazine -- even to the press conference about the Navy's selection of the first women to serve in the "silent service."
Yeah, sure, this is shameless self promotion for us here at Wired, but that is almost how First Class Midshipman Sax sees it herself. She told us so, in an e-mail:
"I am ... an avid reader of WIRED magazine," Sax writes. "In fact, from the day I get the new issue until I've read it cover-to-cover, it hardly leaves my hands.
"I thought you might be interested to know that WIRED has made national news all over the country because I carried it into a press conference about the Navy's selection of the first women to serve aboard submarines (of which I am one)."
No pictures, it didn't happen? Here's the picture, in the Irish Independent.
"You'll note the April issue in my right hand," Sax writes. "Just thought you might be at least mildly entertained."
We are, midshipman, we are. And enjoy the UK, where Wired publishes as well.
Just, please, try to put the magazine down often enough to notice any Crazy Ivans.
