Here are some of the criteria I consider for a "what the heck" item.

  1. It is something that is not immediately obvious (at least to me)
  2. Preferably, it would be old
  3. Something that is not currently used in our labs
  4. Something that does something cool

Hopefully, this item will meet at least some of those criteria (well, at least the first and third in this case)
