Hi Bruce, (((hello Blue Monster))),

"Just announced today, Microsoft Tag is expanding its marketing solution to embrace more recognition technologies and simplify the experience for consumers with one reader for Tags, QR Codes and Near Field Communication (NFC).

"You know Tag as a type of 2D barcode that links physical items in the real world to digital experiences on a mobile device. That will still be true, but by adding support for reading and creating QR Codes and NFC tags, Microsoft Tag delivers the freedom for brands to select the recognition format most appropriate for their customers, and grants customers a single app to launch those experiences.

"Consumer confusion as to which reader to use and overall market fragmentation was a significant factor in our decision to expand the Tag platform. (((And the fact that Microsoft isn't dominating the market, but, what the heck, we all live and learn, eh? You know what's great about QR codes? They're so freakin' ugly that it's obvious that they must do something weird.)))

"The benefits of Tags over QR Codes – including customization, robust analytics, (generally) smaller size and more reliable scanning – are still true, however now we are giving Tag users the ability to read and create the two 2D barcode formats in widespread use from one application, reducing that confusion. (((Oh how good of you to reduce consumer confusion, as opposed to, you know, creating it, like you were doing earlier.))) As we look ahead, we see NFC on the horizon and today lay the groundwork for this innovative technology with the expected boom of adoption in the months and years to come.

"With this release, Microsoft Tag becomes the most robust mobile marketing tool in the industry, giving brands and end users the easy way to use a full suite of recognition technologies, from the original QR Codes to the current Tags and beyond to NFC – all in one place. Here is a link to our blog post announcing the update. Please let us know if you have any questions or if you need anything else."

Thanks,
Kerry
