–Experts Dismantle Grum Botnet
(July 18 & 19, 2012)
Several cybersecurity organizations worked together to dismantle the
Grum botnet, best known for serving up pharmaceutical spam messages. The
takedown process was completed when command-and-control (C&C) servers
in Panama and Russia were shut down. The groups involved in the effort
include Spamhaus, FireEye, and Russia's CERT. At its height, Grum was
responsible for more than 17 percent of spam worldwide. C&C servers in
the Netherlands had been taken down earlier in the week, but those
controlling the botnet set up the new servers in Russia.
