This drone is meant more for government use than something like a Parrot AR drone you can fly in your backyard. Didn’t see it in action.

LG has a scanner mouse you can use to scan documents. I thought it was pretty cool — especially for scanning things like receipts for expense reports — but then I remembered I have an iPhone, and it has a camera and apps that can take care of that sort of thing. Still, seems like something that could come in handy and be more user friendly than larger scanners in an office setting.

I asked Acer what new product they’re most proud of this CES. “The S7 Ultrabook.” One feature they really like is the dual torque hinge, patented (natch). It eliminates screen wiggle, which is nice for touch interfaces. Fold the screen flat, and you can rotate the display orientation 180 degrees and share the screen with someone across a table or desk.

This cute robot will give you a back massage in 15 minute intervals. It’s got an accelometer that helps keep it on your back and from tumbling down to the floor.
It should be available in the U.S. in the next 2-3 months for $70.

One of my favorite places at CES is this outdoor walkway between North Hall and South Hall. Not only is it a huge time-saver, but it’s a tremendous respite from the noise and chaos of the show floor and the walkway in front of the convention center.

Sharp has a pretty gnarly looking $250 boom box at its booth. It comes in a bunch of different metallic shades, like forest green, burnt orange, and slate (those probably aren’t the official color names, but whatevs). I’d really just like to see someone carry this on their shoulder blasting tunes.

CES is a hustle. Sure, the show floor itself is massive, but much of what goes on is offsite. That means lots of shuttling back and forth to other hotels and various locations all set on Las Vegas’ enormous scale. Take this ballroom at the Venetian, for example. It’s just one of several there dedicated to CES exhibitors. This one is dedicated to startups, it’s lit up with cool little products, like the modular robots from Cubelets, that would get lost on the main floor at the Las Vegas Convention Center. But to see it, you’ve got to hoof it. You’ve got to hustle.

It’s About Time. Pebble Says It’s Ready to Finally Ship. Really.
Pebble announced today that it’s finally shipping out a batch of its much-hyped e-paper watches on Jan. 23. No. Really. 15,000 of them to be exact. The other 70,000 will be shipped out later. Sometime after that, the company will start taking orders from consumers who didn’t back the original KickStarter campaign.
Since that ended, they’ve pushed back the shipping date several times, most recently in December, when they went Grinch and said the smartphone-connected watches [wouldn’t ship before Christmas](denied:denied:denied:denied: 11:17 AM but then sent an announcement in December that it wouldn).
Wired asked Pebble’s Head of Operations Rahul Bhagat what they would have done differently if they could start over, and he said they probably would have raised their expectations.
Originally, they set out to raise $100,000 on KickStarter to produce 1,000. They wound up getting orders for 85,000.
But because of high demand and additional funding, Bhagat says Pebble was able to make the watches water-proof, responsive to ambient light and Bluetooth 4.0-capable. They also have a magnetometer.
“We’ve future-proofed it,” Bhagat told Wired. “We’ll be able to create a good ecosystem for apps on the Pebble,” that could include sports and healthcare apps. IfThisThenThat integration is coming soon, allowing Pebblers to get personalized notifications about music and the weather.
Pebble comes in red, orange, black and white. The clear version in the middle will be given away as part of a social media sweepstakes to one lucky winner. It’s kind of cool — when you flip it around, you can see Pebble’s innards.

Shutter triggers are great for shooting with a DSLR on a tripod. Especially when you’re trying to get a shot in low light or shoot a long exposure. The ioShutter expands on the trigger cable by adding the iPhone to the mix.
The cable plugs into the iPhone’s audio jack so there’s no worry about 30-pin to Lightning adaptors. A companion app features, clap to snap, shake to take, time lapse, a shutter timer and long exposures. All of that can be accomplished with the free app. With the $10 app, all of those features are expanded.
The Canon version of the ioShutter is available now with the Nikon version available at the end of January. Both are $70.

I just attended a breakfast with Indiegogo and a few companies with campaigns on the crowdfunding site. Indiegogo CEO and co-founder Slava Rubin suggested that CES 2013 is the year of the little guy, of the gadget startups. It certainly looks like startups are grabbing more of the spotlight at the show this year. Eureka Park, the exhibit area specifically for startups, has doubled in size since CES 2012.
And at least two Indiegogo campaigns are showing off their devices on the showfloor. Stick-N-Find, a bluetooth-enabled tracking sticker, is currently on Indiegogo with more than $650,000 raised. Misfit Shine, a metal waterproof fitness tracker, has raised more than $630,000 on the site, with six more days to go.
Pebble smart watch also had its press event this morning. The company announced that its Kickstarter hit is finally ready to ship, after months of delays, and will start going out to backers on January 23.
With a lot of big players bowing out or downsizing at CES, there’s more room for the smaller companies to shine.

The Las Vegas Convention Center, which spans most of the width of this shot, is huge. I overheard someone say (maybe jokingly, but maybe not) its roughly the same size as their home town but with 10 times the population. Around 150,000 people populate this facility each day during CES.

LG Display showed off a few prototypes including this foldable 10-inch tablet. It’s composed of two 7-inch displays.
We’ve seen hinged tablets along these lines before from Sony, namely the burrito-shaped Tablet P, and we weren’t a huge fan. While the prototype scenarios at LGD — a mini laptop with a touchscreen keyboard and a dual screen e-reader — look pretty nice in theory, hinged tablets don’t seem like they’ll be the next big thing any time soon.
