The digital content of these dedicated display devices may be called "books" for legal and economic skeuomorphic reasons, but they're not "books" any more than an mp3 file is the Beatles playing live in your living room.

"As predicted, it's been a bad quarter for Barnes & Noble. The company posted revenue of $2.2 billion, down 8.8 percent year over year, and Nook sales were hit particularly hard: revenue from the Nook segment was down 26 percent compared to last year's holiday season, though digital content sales climbed 6.8 percent. Combined with a decline in overall retail sales, that added up to a net loss of $6.1 million, compared to $52 million in income last year.
"Barnes & Noble previously said it expected worse-than-anticipated Nook revenue, and in the earnings report it admitted they were due to "low device unit volume" and a "shortfall" over the holidays. Despite reports that it may be scaling back Nook hardware, however, the company says it remains "committed" to tablets and e-readers...."
