1: Great SRL gallery show in New York!
Marlborough Gallery Show, Saturday Jan 6, 2018 545 West 25th St/11th Ave, NY 10001. tel 212-463-8634. Exhibition hours: Mon-Sat 10-5:30pm

Despite extremely cold weather (-20 degrees?) SRL pulled off an exciting show in a brutally challenging environment! Amazingly, all the machines tested outside in the snow worked. Inside the white-cube walls, the “volume” could get menacingly loud, so bright-orange earplugs were given free to each attendee, who was required to sign a liability waiver! Each person was also given a free SRL sticker as a souvenir. The Marlborough Gallery workers were super-supportive, competent and friendly (we met a few: Leo who curated the show, Alexa, Robert and Kristina). There are great photos and videos on Instagram (look for k0re, @survivalresearchlabs, etc, and also FaceBook, YouTube any more.

() Fri Jan 19 **LONDON** JG Ballard: This Is The Way, Step Inside. ICA, The Mall, SW1Y 5AH. (If we could, we’d be there!!) "A screening of short film adaptations exploring Ballard’s 20th Century preoccupation with the machine vs. the 21st Century obsession with the digital towards an anthropological take on disembodiment, honing in on how Ballard perceives both the body, and the human condition.
"In conversation will be filmmakers Simon Barker, Jason Wood and Harley Cokeliss, plus Ballard scholar Dr. Jeanette Baxter (The Anglia Ruskin Centre for Science Fiction and Fantasy).

JG Ballard in Crash! (Harley Cokeliss, 1971): “I think the "key image of the 20th century is the man in the motor car. It sums up everything: the elements of speed, drama, aggression, the junction of advertising and consumer goods with the technological landscape. The sense of violence and desire, power and energy; the shared experience of moving together through an elaborately signalled landscape.
"Everything is there: the speed and violence of our age; the strange love affair with the machine, with its own death.”

4: Our past life: BOOKS / ZINES / PRINT / FILMS / MUSIC / Etc

Highly recommend The Disaster Artist; very funny!

The highlight of the month was going to NYC to see Survival Research Labs at the Marlborough Gallery on Jan 6 (-20 degrees) semi-outdoor show! We went to the after-show dinner at Ru Paul’s former penthouse at the 6th floor of the Jane Hotel and hung out with Paul L and Edward S. and the SRL crew. Came back Jan 8 and saw the (2) Blade Runner films at the Castro Jan 12 (great wide screen). Another local highlight was seeing the Music of Twin Peaks evening at The Chapel featuring Marc Capelle’s Red Room Orchestra with Toby Dammit, et al. on Sat Jan 13 (costumes! dancing! cast members!). We’ve been reading our Dieter Rams hardback (slowly) and on the trip finished Henning Mankell’s Firewall (2002).
