Featured in this article
Shopping for someone else's house is intimidating. What housewarming gifts can you give that they won't already have? What's something they'll actually use instead of just adding to their shelf clutter? There are a few easy classics that folks love to gift—who doesn't love a candle or another little houseplant?—but there are also a lot of really useful, beautiful gifts you can give instead. I've lived in eight apartments in the past 10 years and bought my first home last year—here are the housewarming gifts that are getting daily use in my house.
Whether you're looking to gift upgraded essentials like bamboo bed sheets or a new baking pan, or fun twists on useful tools like an electric lighter or a beautiful oil vessel, this is the guide to help you find all kinds of interesting and genuinely useful gifts for the home.
WIRED's Reviews team has personally tested and vetted everything that appears in our gift guides. Speaking of, check out the rest of our gift guides, including gifts for outdoorsy people, book lovers, new parents, and STEM-loving kids.
Updated December 2025: We've updated this guide with new gifts from LetPot and Lola Blankets.
An Eye-Catching Container
Great Jones
Spout
I'm a big fan of Great Jones' cookware (and I'm not alone in that sentiment here at WIRED), and what I especially like is how the brand has colorful yet affordable options. The latest that caught my eye is the Spout, a beautiful glass vessel made for pouring your favorite kitchen liquid. It's a fun fit whether you want something pretty for your olive oil pours or have a special oil or dressing you want a dressed-up container for. I'm currently dreaming of restocking the port vinaigrette I bought years ago and filling the Spout with it (and pairing this with a special dressing or oil can be a fun way to round out the gift!).
A Sleek Lighter
Luma
Flume Electric Lighter
Lighters are usually ugly, jostling around in the back of a kitchen drawer and occasionally requiring lighter fluid refills. Now you can give the gift of a super stylish version of the once-ugly lighter with the Luma Flume, an electric lighter that doesn't need extra fluids to work. There's a two-step process to turn it on, to help keep little fingers from accidentally activating the electric prongs. It can stand upright, turning it into a piece of table or countertop decor, and it comes in a couple stylish colors like a purple-gray dune shade and soft sage green. It's a really beautiful upgrade to something that's used frequently in the home.
Beautiful Coasters
East Fork
Glass Cloud Coasters
Everyone's home needs a good set of coasters. Not only can they keep your surfaces safe, but a cute set like these Glass Cloud Coasters from East Fork Pottery also make a fun style statement on whatever tabletop they sit on. They come in two gorgeous sets of colors—Day, with a white and blue cloud, and Sunset, with a purple and orange cloud—and are a fun statement for any surface. They're a little slim, but still wide enough for my coffee cups and even my massive Owala. They've held up great after a year of drinks have sat upon them during my working hours, with no scratches or dings to speak of.
Indoor Greenery
LetPot
LPH-SE Senior Hydroponic Growing System
One of the best parts of owning a home is often the sudden availability of more surface area—larger rooms in which to put shelves, bigger kitchens with more counter space. If your giftee is interested in cooking or gardening (or both), this budget hydroponic garden would make a fun and unexpected housewarming present, especially if they live in an apartment. It fits perfectly on a countertop, requires minimal maintenance (you can spot from across the room whether or not it needs more water and nutrients, based on a liquid level gauge on the top), and, best of all, can accept any seeds you want to plant in it. No proprietary pods needed, and replacement sponges are ubiquitous and inexpensive on Amazon. —Kat Merck
Fresh Sheets
Bedsure
GentleSoft Cooling Sheets
Nothing says new home like a new set of bedding. One of our favorite affordable, long-lasting sets of bedsheets are Bedsure's GentleSoft Bamboo Cooling Sheet Set ($67). WIRED reviewer Julia Forbes reaches for it more than any other set she has, and says her set has lasted years. These sheets pack all our favorite benefits of bamboo sheets with a silky-cool feel, but are more affordable since they're made with bamboo rayon. It's a great price for a nice gift and something you know they'll need.
High-End Essentials
Flamingo Estate
The Chef's Kiss Gift Set
If you're looking for something on the higher end but don't want to just gift another bottle of wine, try the Chef's Kiss gift set from Flamingo Estate. The maker of our favorite scented candle puts a delicious extra virgin olive oil, spicy chili olive oil, and wildflower honey into a gift-wrapped box for a splurge of essentials your favorite chef will love using. I currently can't stop using the olive oil as a drizzle on my favorite pasta dishes.
A Power Cleaner
SonicPower
Electric Scrubber
Moving into a new home always feels like I’m in the cleanest place I’ve ever lived. Fresh paint! A clean shower! A stove that isn’t covered in burned rice remains! But it’s work to keep it that way. My new favorite tool to clean with is SonicPower’s Electric Spin Scrubber. It’s great to grab for shower stains and sticky sink buildup, and it comes with four different brushes so that you can pair the right brush with the right area of your home, like the hard brush for my shower floor and scour brush for the stovetop. It’s got simple controls: one button to turn it on and switch between low and high power mode, and a little screen to show how much battery life is left.
A Pre-Made Gallery Wall
Society6
Gallery Wall Sets
Anyone who’s moved from an apartment to an actual house—or from a starter house to a bigger house—knows the struggle. You’ve moved everything in, you’ve hung up all your pictures, but maybe there just aren’t enough, or what worked in the old place just isn’t working in the new place. Everyone loves a good gallery wall, and these professionally curated sets from Society6 are guaranteed to work together and look great in any setting. I had previously bought a different curated gallery wall for my living room, and not only were all the frames made of the same wood, the frames and prints came separately and required assembly.
When this set arrived, I deeply and immediately regretted not going with it first. The art arrives professionally framed and matted and ready to hang, and the different frames lend a high-end look to any room they go in. Set options as of press time include Heritage Haven (vintage still-lifes), Sierra (midcentury cool, pictured), Whimsy (funky-feminine), The Curator (art museum chic), The Seaside (coastal-inspired), and Dan Hobday Signature (an eclectic selection of his works). —Kat Merck
For the Tinned-Fish Lover
Fishwife
The Cookbook Gift Box
One of my friends and I are obsessed with tinned fish, and one of our favorite brands is Fishwife for its fun variety of tinned fish and delicious flavors. You can often find us spending a lunch break at our local Sprouts picking out another can to try. Don't let the “spicy” on the label scare you, I'm not a big spice fan and I’ve enjoyed every can I've tried. Anyway, now there's a perfect gift set for tinned-fish fans like us: Fishwife's Cookbook Gift Box. It has Fishwife's cookbook with 80 recipes using tinned fish, and comes with three different cans from Fishwife (I love the albacore tuna in lemon one). It comes in a cute box too.
Colorful Baking Trays
If they love to bake, whether it’s homemade scones or just premade cookie dough from the grocery store (I’ve got aspirations of the former but currently have the latter in my fridge), these Great Jones baking sheets are both great for baking and fun to look at. The baking sheets come in five food-themed colors: raspberry pink, mustard yellow, broccoli green, blueberry blue, and pepper black, and can come as a half-sheet or two quarter sheets, or a set of both sizes. The two quarter sheets double nicely as little serving trays for a party.
A Starter Power Tool
Greenworks
24V Compact Brushless Cordless Drill & Impact Driver Combo Kit
In my seven years as a homeowner, a cordless electric drill is my most-used power tool—in fact, it's the only one I use more than a few times a year. This Greenworks kit has both a standard drill you can use to screw together furniture along with an impact driver that has five times as much torque for when you need to screw into something thick and heavy. (I have found that the impact driver is mostly useful for helping me avoid the temptation to push the regular drill too far on the rare occasion it's needed.)
This GreenWorks set works well, but the biggest reason to opt for it is that the 24-V Lithium batteries are recharged via standard USB-C, which is an extremely nice feature for people who don't want to hassle with the exotic brand-specific charging blocks that are far too common. That battery will also double as a backup battery to charge your phone a couple of times in a blackout, which is welcome versatility, especially for people with smaller spaces who might only use a drill occasionally. —Martin Cizmar
A Handy Little Blender
Ninja
Blast Portable Blender
I was not expecting to love this tiny, cordless blender as much as I do. It takes around an hour to charge via USB-C, and the battery doesn’t last very long—about as long as it takes to make two smoothies. But we recently had to do an emergency restock on frozen fruit and protein powder because it’s more convenient than dragging out the Vitamix every morning. It has an 18-ounce capacity, which is pretty big, but my 7-year-old can drink from it easily, sadly. The lid and container are dishwasher-safe, and the blending is remarkably thorough and effective—no frozen berries getting stuck, no large chunks left. If you have an early commute, you can even blend and grab on your way to the car. —Adrienne So
A Blanket Hug
Lola Blankets
The Original Lola
Moving is stressful. You know what can help with that? A weighted blanket. One of the most beautiful weighted blankets I've tried is from Lola Blankets, which has supersoft, faux fur polyester cover that comes in a range of gorgeous colors. It's a lighter weight, with the large blanket only weighing 10 pounds, which I find to be a nice weight to use casually without feeling too heavy. It's one of my top picks in our guide to the best weighted blankets. If you're looking for more of the classic knit style to give as a gift, I really like Bearaby’s Tree Napper ($199) and Nuzzie’s Ice Knit Blanket ($199). Unsure what weight you should choose? A weighted blanket should be about 10 percent of the user's weight, and I'd recommend going lighter rather than heavier.
Expanding Spice Rack
The Container Store
Everything Organizer Expanding 3-Tier Organizer
Nothing says it’s a real home like being able to see all the spices. The Container Store’s Expanding Three-Tier Organizer has three little shelves and can expand to nearly 2 feet long for plenty of room to arrange spices and jars. I don’t know about your spice shelf, but our house has a collection of hot sauces and extra containers of furikake (we can never remember if we’re running out yet) that are much easier to navigate with the three-shelf setup. It’s not an expensive item, either, but really cleans up a shelf in your pantry in a matter of minutes. It's the only reason my spice section looks even remotely organized.
Shelf Expansion
The Container Store
Like-it Modular Storage
Moving into a new home sounds like a magical time to get everything organized, right? I thought so, too, and then the chaos of moving in turned every closet I owned into a dumping ground. The top shelves of both my hall closet and my bedroom closet were the worst offenders. So much space, turned into haphazard piles of sweaters and random accessories. Until, that is, I added The Container Store’s Like-It modular bins and drawers to the top of my closet. You can stack them if you’ve got the height space, but I found that just two bins side by side suddenly organized sweaters that usually took up double the space. The drawers are handy too for more miscellaneous items. I’ll be adding these to every closet in the house, slowly and surely, and I’m sure any other homeowner you know would love them just as much as I do.
A Stylish Shower Organizer
Quiet Town
The Spot
I've hated every shower organizer I've ever had. That is, until I saw The Spot from Quiet Town. It comes in three colors and uses a pegboard-like system, coming with three organizers, one hook, and a mirror you can attach to the organizer wherever you see fit. It's a modern style statement in a shower organizer, something I never thought I'd find. The included organizers have enough space for one person's various shower bottles, so if you're gifting this to a couple, you might want to add on an extra bottle basket or two for them to fit everything on there.
But my favorite thing is how insanely long the included strap is. I have a showerhead designed for someone upward of 6 feet tall, and most shower organizers sit weirdly high off my showerhead. The Spot doesn't have this problem thanks to the included long strap. I was able to hang mine about 22 inches below my showerhead with some extra strap to spare. It also comes with accessories to drill it into the wall if you prefer that.
Honorable Mentions
Cold Picnic Bath Mats for $70: The design I have isn't available anymore, but the rest of Cold Picnic's bath mat lineup has similarly cool designs and should hold up just as well as mine has. After a year of use, it still feels brand-new after a run in the washing machine and dryer.
A bottle of wine: You really can't go wrong with this option—they can either drink it themselves, or have it ready and on-hand for their next party or gathering.
A nice candle: If you're going to gift a candle, make sure it's a good one. Our favorite scented candle is the Heirloom Tomato Candle from Flamingo Estate ($64). It's an amazing scent that has an impressive cold and warm throw to scent a room. If that scent isn't speaking to you, or you're looking to spend a little less, a personal favorite candle of mine is The Now's Jasmine Coconut Candle ($48).
