Gallery: Trailer Gallery: God-Warriors, Vile Monsters Fill Capcom's New Games
01asuras-wrath
A panoply of bizarre and exotic creatures — including Hindu gods, many-headed dragons and paunchy journalists — populate the new games coming from Capcom Entertainment. Capcom took the veil off its upcoming slate of videogames at its recent Captivate event in Miami. Game|Life, having not jetted off for fun in the Florida sun, was not in attendance to see these games revealed. But like you, we have been watching the trailers with great interest, filled as they are with the sorts of fantastical characters and gameplay that we expect from the company, the leader in high-end games from Japan. Jason Schreier and I offer our first impressions of each game, from Asura's Wrath all the way to Street Fighter x Tekken, in this handy trailer gallery. __Above:__ Asura's Wrath ------------- __Chris:__ I figured Capcom, after announcing [Asura's Wrath](http://stag-komodo.wired.com/gamelife/2010/09/asuras-wrath/) at the Tokyo Game Show, would put the focus on showing off actual gameplay. Unfortunately, this is just a whole lot of really good-looking cinematics, which are about as useful as [that Dead Island trailer](http://stag-komodo.wired.com/gamelife/2011/02/dead-island-trailer/) in terms of illustrating what this mythology-themed action game will be like. __Jason:__ Asura's Wrath, which tells the story of deity Asura as he attempts to rescue his kidnapped daughter, is a gorgeous, far-out game that appears to involve a lot of [Quick Time Events](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quick_time_event). According to previews by some of the writers who went to Capcom's Miami event, [this trailer is part of a boss battle](http://www.destructoid.com/preview-asura-s-wrath-198635.phtml) that's at least partially on rails. Though the whole mythology thing is getting a little overdone, there's something very compelling about an epic duel against an obese god. __Chris:__ Wait, so that's actually gameplay? Hmm. Where are the QTE button prompts? I'm so confused.

Super Street Fighter II: Arcade Edition --------------------------------------- __Chris:__ When I was a youngster I spent stupid amounts of money buying every new $75 Street Fighter upgrade for Super NES. If only we had had the ability to download such upgrades, as we do today! Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition will only cost $15 if you already own the game. How wonderful. Also, if Evil Ryu has red hair, does that mean he was evil in [the first Street Fighter](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_Fighter_%28video_game%29)? __Jason:__ More button-mashing! Yay!
03street-fighter-x-tekken
Street Fighter x Tekken ----------------------- __Chris:__ Another game that can be used to illustrate a general point about the Japanese market: We will see more and more of these collaborations between two separate companies to attempt to sell a single game to two groups of fans. (Also see [Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney](http://stag-komodo.wired.com/gamelife/2010/10/layton-ace-attorney/).) In this case, we have two major fighting-game series joining forces to punch each other in the face. Capcom's version (because naturally Namco is creating the wholly separate game Tekken x Street Fighter) looks basically like Street Fighter IV with more air combos and the additional cast, all of whom look out of place, except maybe for Bob, toward the end there. __Jason:__ Crossover games are a lot of fun, and it's easy to see a game like Street Fighter x Tekken finding the same mass appeal as Marvel vs. Capcom. It'll be interesting to see how competitive gamers react to the new matchups and combinations. Plus, maybe now I'll have something to do with my Ryu-Heihachi fan fiction.
04resident-evil-the-mercenaries-3d-2
Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D --------------------------------- __Chris:__ This is not the Resident Evil game I am really looking forward to on the 3DS. That would be [Resident Evil: Revelations](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resident_Evil:_Revelations). That said, the big surprise of the [Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D](http://www.capcom-unity.com/snow_infernus/blog/2011/04/12/captivate_2011:_resident_evil:_the_mercenaries_3d) trailer is that a playable demo of Revelations will be included in this game, so that's a plus. Otherwise, the thing that's really drawing me to Mercenaries is the ability to team up with a friend in this action-oriented Resident Evil spinoff. I don't know how much I'd like to play this alone, but I have friends who would probably help out. __Jason:__ It's hard to get too excited about spending $40 on a fancy port of an optional feature from Resident Evil 4 and 5, but at least the 3-D effects will keep things interesting (and super-scary). The Revelations demo is a nice touch, but I'll just wait until the footage is uploaded on YouTube.
05dragons-dogma
Dragon's Dogma -------------- __Chris:__ Japan, as a nation, is into killing giant monsters these days. Or ever since World War II, if you start from Godzilla instead of [Monster Hunter](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monster_Hunter). So it's not surprising to see that Capcom's next big console game, [Dragon's Dogma](http://www.capcom-unity.com/snow_infernus/blog/2011/04/12/captivate_2011:_dragons_dogma), is about slaying dragons and hydras and harpies and that sort of thing. Unfortunately, this trailer leaves me feeling flat. I used to expect crazy, left-field ideas from Capcom's developers, but maybe this is the result of the mass exodus of creative talent to [Platinum Games](http://platinumgames.com/). Also, I hope no one will blame me for taking any "early 2012" release date announced in early 2011 with several grains of salt. __Jason:__ I was a bit disappointed to hear that Dragon's Dogma, which Capcom has been teasing for the past week-and-a-half, is not a new installment in the [Breath of Fire role-playing-game series](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breath_of_Fire). Regardless, the trailer looks sharp, and it's always great to see a new original property in this age of countless sequels and remakes. I have faith that producer [Hiroyuki Kobayashi](http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1398329/) and director [Hideaki Itsuno](http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1393914/) can whip some style into this.
06dead-rising-2-off-the-record
Dead Rising 2: Off the Record ----------------------------- __Chris:__ Everyone knows it: Games are more expensive to develop these days, and publishers have to come up with new and exciting ways to get you to pay more for the same content. I thought I'd seen everything, but then I hadn't seen [Dead Rising 2: Off the Record](http://www.capcom-unity.com/jgonzo/blog/2011/04/12/captivate_2011:_dead_rising_2:_off_the_record). It's a new edition of [last year's Dead Rising 2](http://stag-komodo.wired.com/gamelife/2010/09/dead-rising-2-2/) that posits the question: What if, instead of a new main character, Capcom had stuck with Frank West, photojournalist and protagonist of the first game in the zombie-massacre series? Give Capcom some money, and you'll get to find out. This isn't a bad idea (I'm sure the game will be packed with extra content), but it's indicative of the direction that big-budget games are heading. __Jason:__ Some games offer [New Game Plus modes](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Game_Plus), which allow you to replay them with new characters or special abilities. Dead Rising 2: Off the Record simply *is* a New Game Plus mode, which strikes me as an extremely sleazy way to make money off dedicated fans of the series. Maybe Off the Record will feature enough unique content to justify its existence as an entirely new game rather than a piece of downloadable content, but the way it's currently packaged just screams, "Give us money, sheep!"
