*The Strain Trilogy* by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan ---------------------------------------------------------- This year the marked the end of Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan's [*Strain Trilogy*](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Strain). And even though its creators were sad to see it go — Del Toro told Wired.com last month that he would love to add more chapters but "[at some point you have to stop writing](http://stag-komodo.wired.com/underwire/2011/11/interview-guillermo-del-toro/)" — the story had to reach its natural end. The three-book tale (*The Strain, The Fall and The Night Eternal*) kicked off in 2009 with a vampiric virus that left the world on the edge of annihilation and in the midst of a nuclear winter. Then it followed the lives of the remaining few who sought to pry the world from the control of ancient vampire the Master. Did the survivors succeed? After 1966 masterwork [Pet Sounds](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pet_sounds), bandleader Brian Wilson couldn't negotiate the LSD comedowns, creative pressure and intra-band drama.
