What Not to Gift Your Mom

  • Anything related to cleaning. Sure, it's tempting to gift her a new robot vacuum or cordless vac. But unless she specifically asked for a new vacuum—and it better be a good one, like a Dyson!—then you've just given her a chore. And, in many cases, a chore you could do yourself.
  • Generic sets. This is a good rule of thumb for all women, as I remember getting a lot of these sets as a teen. Things like random body lotion and spray sets from Victoria's Secret or Bath and Body Works, or random “Mom” sets, are pretty thoughtless and probably doomed to just clutter a closet. Body care especially is pretty personal, and unless you know it's a scent or brand up her alley, it'll likely go unused.
  • Weight-loss products. As a mom, I had better not see anything related to weight loss, including a scale, unless very specifically requested. I won't elaborate!
  • Gifts that are actually for the kids. I think there are ways to do this thoughtfully; I'd love a matching sweater set with my son, for example, or if I were expecting a new baby, it would be fun to get some useful items for both of us. But she's her own person beyond being a mom, and it's important to honor that when you give a gift.
